Immedia Semiconductor Debuts with First Ever Full High Definition H.264 Scalable Video Coding Chip Technology

Wilmington, MA — March X, 2009 - Immedia Semiconductor today emerged from stealth mode and announced that it is developing the first ever 1080p60 capable H.264 Scalable Video Coding (SVC) chip technology. This technology will enable a new generation of video devices and delivery infrastructure providing a substantially enhanced end user video experience in a broad range of applications, including broadcast, internet and mobile television. Immedia Semiconductor will demonstrate its technology at the 2009 edition of the NAB Show™ in Las Vegas, April 18 - 23.

Founded by the same team that started Sand Video and Pixel Magic, Immedia’s senior management team has well over 100 years of experience implementing high performance codec chips and OEM system solutions. At Sand Video, the team developed the first H.264 decoder chip, and was subsequently acquired by Broadcom. At Pixel Magic, they developed the first JBIG and JPEG chips, leading to being acquired by Oak Technology (now Zoran).

The ITU and ISO (MPEG) ratified the SVC standard in late 2007. SVC enables the encoding of a high quality video bitstream that contains within it an H.264 compatible base layer and one or more enhancement layers. This layered approach to coding provides the ability for multiple representations of the video to be derived from a single source stream with minimal overhead. With support for frame rate, resolution, and quality scalability, SVC is the preferred solution for a range of emerging applications in the broadcast, internet, and mobile TV spaces.

Immedia’s patent pending technology implements SVC in a unique system architecture that facilitates increased system efficiency and robustness and lower device and infrastructure costs.
